This study examined the impact of supervision on counseling interactions using Relational Communication Analysis. Data were collected from 21 cases across seven supervisor-counselor-client groups. After supervision, counselors’ assertive messages and symmetrical exchanges decreased, while receptive messages and complementary exchanges increased. Supervisors’ communication styles were reflected in counselors’ subsequent client interactions. Counselors’ self-reported supervision experiences showed no consistent relationship with actual interactional change, whereas clients’ reported outcomes and satisfaction were associated with increases in receptive and complementary communication. These findings suggest that counselors mediate the transfer of supervision to counseling and highlight the limitations of self-report data. This study offers preliminary evidence of supervision effects and directions for further research.
