Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the usage of 'uli, gukmin, ideul, geudel' (we, people, these people, they) in editorials of newspapers. The data are the morphological component of the [Trends 21] Corpus, which include texts of four major Korean newspapers of Dong-a, Chosun, Joongang, and Hankyoreh. In this study we use articles published in 2000~2011. The size of the editorial corpus is around ten million words. In this study, editorial writers' opinions are analyzed in macroscopic perspectives in terms of descriptive characteristics of the words 'uli' (we) and 'gukmin' (people). By comparison with report texts, we address the differences between descriptive and argumentative essays about the use of 'uli, gukmin, ideul, geudeul' (we, people, these people, they). For example, 'uli' and 'gukmin' are collocated with words meaning economy, eatery, government, politics, and nation, which show the writers' friendly attitudes. Also 'ideul' is collocated with the words meaning "proceed, approve, report" which are positive in attitude, and 'geudeul' is collocated with the words meaning "fight, ignore, tolerate" which are negative in attitude.
