Abstract

This paper explores the issue of inequality and democracy in LatinAmerica. We examine the trend of income inequality and povertyin the post-democratic transition of selected Latin American countries. We also explore whether citizens’ perceptions and assessments ofinequality correspond with objective income inequality, and whethercitizens link subjective assessments about inequality with their supportfor democracy. Further, the paper analyzes the link between politicalinstitutions, government partisanship, and income inequality in LatinAmerica. We find that the institutional effect is weaker than thegovernment partisanship effect in ameliorating inequality in the region.
