Abstract
Korea is a latecomer in the internationalization of higher education. The recent move has been motivated largely by three factors: (i) publication of international rankings by a number of international and national agencies, such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Thomson Reuther, Times, Shanghai Jiatong University, as well as Joongang Daily Newspaper, etc.; (ii) increased involvement of Korean society in international affairs through the accession to the OECD in 1996 and hosting of summit meetings such as ASEM Summit (2000), APEC Summit (2005) and G20 Summit (2010), which have consequently led to greater exposure to the international society; (iii) university’s search for new sources of student recruitments. Both the government and universities have started rigorous programs, especially since the beginning of 2000s. The initiation and establishment in Korea of ASEMDUO Fellowship Program and Co-sponsorship with the European Commission of the ICI-ECP are two of most distinguished outcomes of government’s drive to internationalization of Korea’s higher education. A number of Korean universities have been endeavoring in this direction as well. Many of them have established English‐taught education programs, such as college (division) and graduate school of international studies, and incrementally raised the ratio of courses taught in English. There is a fierce competition, in fact, in the higher‐end Korean university group for better international ranks.
