Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop a new translation quality assessment matrix and to make a comprehensive evaluation on La Porte etroite by Andre Gide, one of the most-read and most-translated French novels in Korea. In order to achieve this aim,the study subdivides the assessment process into three stages. First, the study implements a preliminary task which consists of an analysis of the text and research on the bibliography of previous translations for the work. Nine out of 219 translations by 109different translators are selected through the analysis and research. Secondly, the study analyzes the nine translations by applying assessment criteria established by the research team for the "Evaluation of Korean Translations of French Great Novels." For this, the study employes “the evaluation at the fundamental level”technique to verify and analyze obvious errors, that is, non acceptable disaccord between the source material and the target texts. Finally, the study implements this assessment work at a deeper level to grasp the distinct features of the translations and the strategies of the translators. As a result, this study assures that the quality for the translations of La Porte etroite, when considered as a whole, is at a high level. Certainly, this result came from the successful translation of Yi Young-dong (Cheongsusa, 1957), which brought about the two other great translations by Lee Seong-bok (Keimyung Univ. Press, 2000) and Yi Hye-won (Penguin Classic Korea, 2008).
