- Abstract
- This study was conducted to examine the effect of the horticultural therapy program on personality development focused on psychological and social maturity of female inmates of juvenile reformatories in adolescence for the purpose of relapse prevention of juvenile crimes which are one of the serious social problems. For research procedures, a trial group and a comparison group was composed among female inmates of juvenile reformatories located in Anyang city, Gyeonggi province to conduct a preliminary inspection, and a post-inspection was conducted after applying horticultural therapy to the trial group, and the first maintenance test in 2 months after conducting the post-test, and the second maintenance test was conducted with the trial group in 2 months after conducting the first maintenance test. For measuring tools, two scales of psychological maturity test and social maturity test were employed and the horticultural therapy program used for this study was divided into 4 categories including growing plants indoors, Art & Craft, group activity, sharing ∙expressing which were conducted for 100 minutes once each week(friday) for 12 sessions in total, and for data analysis SPSS v. 17.0 was used and in order to make up for credibility by statistical test, the content of the post impression paper etc. was analyzed, which was made up by participants by each session. Research findings obtained through the above process are as follows: First, it was found that the horticultural therapy program applied to the current study has an effect on an increase in female inmates' overall psychological maturation, positive thinking, self-efficacy, self-esteem, emotional stability, endurance and challenging spirit by each subfactor. Second, it was found that the horticultural therapy program applied to the current study has an effect on an increase in female inmates' overall social maturation, interpersonal relations, self-control abilities, communicative and decision making abilities, a sense of community by each subfactor and significant effects did not appear in relation to social affinity, social competence, and social efficacy. Third, the results of the maintenance test with the trial group in 2 months after conducting the horticultural therapy program and the results of the second maintenance test after 4 months and the results of the post-test were compared, which did not indicated any significant change. It means the effect of the horticultural therapy program was relatively maintained for 4 months. Through this, we could observe that horticultural therapy has an effect on an increase in psychological ・social maturation which plays a crucial role in performing character development of female inmates of the juvenile reformatory in their adolescence. Through this study it was analyzed that horticultural therapy has a significant effect on an increase in psychological and social maturity which plays a crucial role in performing character development by female inmates of juvenile reformatories in adolescence, and it was found the effect of the horticultural therapy program maintained for 4 months. Therefore, the present study has meanings in that it provide basic data for professional horticultural therapy program development in order to prevent reoccurrence of juvenile delinquency as well as providing data to be used in connection with the regular course as part of the character development treatment program for female inmates of the juvenile reformatory, whose future is still left without deep-rooted habits of crimes, and it has suggested that it’s necessary to look for application methods of character education of the female inmates of the juvenile reformatory through horticultural therapy.
