- Abstract
- This paper aims to show that the omission of the object particle in spoken Korean can be better explained by considering not only semantic/pragmatic factors but also the prosodic nature of the phenomenon. We argue that the omission of the object particle is prosodically similar to the phonological contraction or compound formation. In this paper, we assume that the object and predicate forms one phonological phrase (PP) in an unmarked/default situation, and that this is the core, behind-the-scenes driving force of the particle omission. This observation supports the Minimised Form and Minimised Domain hypothesis of Hawkins (2004). Previous studies have attempted to show that the realization of the object particle is related to a (contrastive) focus based on semantic/pragmatic factors. This paper, however, demonstrates that prosody plays an important role in the realization of object particles as well. In addition, this paper also addresses the limits of written-sentence-based works related to particle omissions.
