- Abstract
- Ecopoetry pursues the realization of the ecological crisis and the conquest of it. It implies questions about the universal values that the whole world holds in common. This research is about what the ecopoems of Ammons and Choe Seong‐ho contribute to ecopoetry’s new vision and methodology, as their poems have not yet been studied using methods of comparative literature. In Ammons’s and Choe Seong‐ho’s poems, a minute method of observation is used.
Thus, they are able to realize the mechanisms shared by human beings and nature and to fundamentally criticize the danger of destruction of ecological systems. Their understandings of the basic principle of nature are similar to Lao‐tzu’s philosophy. They intuit nature as an ultimate root and esthetically represent the movement of all things in it. Their poems realize new forms that are free from previous poems’ forms and accord with their free thought.
Moreover, they awaken a sense of freedom and laughter by freeing their open minds from the gaze of human‐centric eyes. Ammons’s and Choe Seong‐ho’s poems extend the possibility of ecopoetry through many new methods like scientific methods, philosophical bases, and esthetical attempts. They secure objective viewpoints and persuasive power through the scientific method. They do not cease to criticize ecosystem’s reality; they offer insight into nature’s source and show a vision for better human life. Their poems also provide reference points on the harmony of ecology and poetry. Their clear ecological awareness and esthetic personalities are combined synergistically.
