Abstract
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of dental hygiene students of the quality assurance of dental radiation and to investigate their attitude toward such quality assurance and related educational experiences in an effort to accelerate the preparation of a curriculum for systematic quality-assurance. Methods. The subjects in this study were 474 dental hygiene students who participated in dental radiography courses. A self-administered survey was conducted to gather data. Results. The mean (SD) score of knowledge in quality assurance for dental x-ray (QAXR) was 7.2 (2.0) out of a possible 12 points and the mean (SD) score of attitude toward such quality assurance was 47.7 (13.4) out of a possible 100 points. Among a total of 13 items for practical education of QAXR, 27.4% had no experience of education of QAXR and 45.1% had been educated with only 3 or less items. While students who experienced education or training of QAXR showed a significant higher mean knowledge score (p≤0.02), they showed a lower mean attitude score (p≤0.02). Conclusions.Appropriate education on knowledge as well as an attitude for QAXR should be provided to raise the awareness of students on the necessity of quality assurance, to incite their interest in, and to improve their knowledge of, quality assurance. A method of boosting the future job performance of prospective dental hygienists in the clinical field should be discreetly considered.
