- Abstract
- The use of intensfiers and other degree adverbs are highly influenced by their surrounding contexts, since their primary role is to show speakers’ emotion and attitude in a more efficient manner. In addition, women's language differs from men's in the use of intensfiers. Since Lakoff(1975), a great amount of attention has been paid to the latter problem. Most of the research, however, has relied either on researcher's own intuition or on small-scale case studies. In this paper we, using Sejong Spoken Corpus, try to see how registers(spoken/ written, private/public) and gender would influence the usage of intensfiers in spoken Korean. We have discovered that in private speech women use more intensifiers than men, while relatively little gender difference was found in public speech. Furthermore, we investigate the use of intensifiers in contexts in terms of semantic prosody, i.e. positive and negative meaning flavors that verbs or adjectives provide.
