- Abstract
- Recently, there has been growing interest in the quality assessment of translation conducted in Korea, and serious discussions regarding translation quality, focused mainly on literary works, are being carried out. Within this context, this article outlines and examines some major trends of the theoretical approaches of translation quality assessment that have been discussed, and then describes some elements that should be taken into account in future discussions of translation quality. The first section of the article provides a brief introduction to the subjective/intuitive, response-based, linguistic, and functionalist approaches of translation quality assessment, and explains the characteristics and limitations of each approach. The following section presents fives aspects that have been overlooked in the existing evaluation models: the purpose of the evaluation, the applicability of evaluation models, the nature of source text, the evaluator, and the entire process of quality assurance.
