- Abstract
- The aim of this paper is to investigate several issues that I will address out in Hun-min-jeong-eum with Hae-rye(explanation and examples), mainly with respect to the phonetic and phonological aspects. The issues of my concern in this paper are as follows: (1) the pronunciation of ‘ㅆ’ and ‘ㅿ’, (2) the content of ‘凝’ and the pronunciations of glottal sounds, (3) the transcription of 8 codas from the viewpoint of slow and abrupt closing. I devote my paper to the issues by carefully reexamining the contents in Hun-min-jeong-eum, and by slightly switching the existing concept of a terminology ‘凝’ to a new contextual interpretation. My study of this paper contributes to a recognition that some phonetic knowledge, which people have believed to be discovered by the western scholastic pursuit, was elucidated by the Korean scholars in Joseon dynasty in the 15th century, and to an understanding that the transcription of 8 codas did not entirely reflect the phonological phenomenon of neutralization in coda in middle Korean.
