- Abstract
- A total of 6,800 titles of Korean films of all periods (1919~2007), which are compiled in KMDb(Korean Movie Database), were tagged and statistically analyzed. Among other findings, around 10% of all the words in the titles are words of foreign origin. When examined in terms of the 11 periods from 1919 through 2007, titles composed of only Korean native words have continuously occupied 20% of the titles, except for the very early period. Titles having words of foreign origin have continuously increased while the rest (titles having words of Chinese origin) have decreased. An interesting observation is that the number of titles with words of foreign origin decreased temporarily during the so called ‘IMF period’ (1998~2001). This suggests some implications for the relationship between social environments and the use of foreign words.
