Abstract
The aim of this article is to clarify the relationship between general and specific netiquettes for several internet services on the one hand and the face-to-face communication norms presented by A. F. von Knigge in the 敬 漀渀 18th century and the famous Conversational Maxims by P. Grice on the other. The focus of the analysis lies in which norms exist, and how these are similar or different in these two types of conversational 搀椀昀s. How the visible differences in the new media are to be ex猀 䌀ined is also a subject to be discussed here. For this purpose netiquettes for e-mailing, newsgroup posting, and on-䍬ine chatting 愀爀re s牣rutinized according to R. Jakobson’s six main functions of lang⁵昀愀 栀攀but in order to de灴漀猀琀椀ne which communication norms are main⁴䌀ined 汴椀渀最晵愀湨最晵t the 敬ong-灴漀猀琀 changes in the society and which norms had to be created or amended on the basis of the medial distinctivenesses. After addressing this, it is argued that certain norms for conversation in real life are more strongly demanded in internet communication because otherwise, due to the lack of nonverbal clues for interpretation of utterances and the possibility of misunderstanding, a break in communication, or even miscommunication, would be more likely to occur than in a real conversation if on-line participants weren’t, for example, to follow conversational tips. The rule of politeness is in this respect somewhat representative. In addition to politeness, the most acknowledged values in internet communication are harmony with co-communicators, consideration of others, tolerance, orientation to the net community, efficiency of in- formation exchange.
