- Abstract
- Today, “natural translation” has almost become a “superstition” for koreans. Human language is called also “natural language”, but what is natural is rather “language competence”, not language itself. Language is a social production, so is the writing. If we reconsider the history of korean writing, we can recognize that the translation held a key role in it. In fact, the history of korean writing is largely a history of translation writing. That is why we need to investigate the history of korean writing through the historical carto- graphy of translation writing. For this purpose, we have chosen to observe, among many others, the problem of eonhae in Chosun Dynasty, translation of chinese classical novels and chinese historical tales, translation writing in the Enlightenment Period, translation writing in Modern Ages, and the problem of translationese, as main factors of this cartography. In doing this work, we relied partly on the “technique of compilation” found in Choi J.M.(2004). Further investigation of the question could be avantageously carried in the field of “translational humanities”, by the aide of translation criticism.
