Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make an analysis of Calatrva's works from the perspective of tectonics theory. First, some features in his works could be found, one of which is to maximize structural aesthetics through exposing and arraying the form-active structural elements or relating (a)symmetric forces to form. Another is to obtain concepts and forms from paintings or sculptures. In addition to that, to represent kinetic movement or sense of movement also get his works to have symbolic meanings. Extending study of his architectural characters, this study explicated that his works could be analyzed from the perspective of tectonics theory after scrutinizing his concepts on the relationship between material, construction, force, movement and form, which was compared with tectonics theory. Particularly using Karl Bőtticher's theory of tectonics as a analysis tool, Milwaukee Art Museum and Turning Torso was analyzed. The investigation showed Various elements in the works could be interpreted as coreform(kernform) and artform(kunstform) at the same time. Consequently, this study proved that Calatrava's works have something in common with tectonics.
