Abstract
ImjinWaeran-Japanese invasion by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during Chosun dynasty- has been called in the different names in the three Asian countries like Korea, China and Japan. Especially in Japan it has various names with the times. For example, it had been called <Karairi>, <Chosenseibatsu>, <Choseneki>, <kouraijin>, <Chosenjin>, <Sankanseibatsu>, <Seikan> since pre-modern period. But now they are calling it <Chosenshuppei> or <Bunrok- Keichonoeki> which was named after the era of the then emperor. From the various names for ImjinWaeran we can see that Japanese understanding and evaluation about ImjinWaeran has not been done well yet. This paper is to grasp the Japanese view of the war through examining the change of understanding of ImjinWaeran which was the first overseas war for Japan to conquer the other country. <The conquest of Three kingdoms by empress Jingu> was considered the cause of ImjinWaeran in the literary works like Chosenkungimono. It can not be thought without being premised on an assumption that Chosun had paid tribute to Japan long time ago. Like this the Japanese view of Chosun has been handed down to this day, which originated from the above assumption. In the era of the Meiji Retoration ImjinWaeran was evaluated as one of historical events, which was performed to make Hideyoshi's dream-the great conquest of the continent-come true. Since the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan in 1965, new forms of literary works related to ImjinWaeran have appeared to be seen. In the past works we could just see ImjinWaeran as one of the historical events and heroic generals during the war like Kato Kiyomasa. But in modern works we can get to see main characters who were common people or significant and symbolic people under the name of cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan. For example, there are Sayaka (Chosun name was Kim Chungsun), Shim Soogwan, Oda Julia, lots of nameless Japanese people and women of Yangban. Through the lives of these kinds of people it seems that they tried hard to reinterpret the meaning of the war. They show an antiwar idea with their works depicting characters who were leading a tragic life affected by the war. Like this, today, it can be said that Japanese people are seeing ImjinWaeran in a new light again.
