Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of /ɯ/ and /ʌ/ in Daegu dialect and to discuss some correlations between production and perception of these vowels. In previous studies, it was reported that Daegu dialect has different vowel systems depending on generations: the generation over 40 years of age has six vowels and that in their 20's has seven vowels. So two groups of Daegu speakers ― those in their 20's and those in their 40-50's ― participated in this study as subjects. Two experiments are conducted. Experiment I is a perception test on human names. The results of the experiment are as follows: First, the subjects in the two age groups perceive /ɯ/ and /ʌ/ differently; The younger subjects perceive these vowels better than the older subjects. Second, /ɯ/ and /ʌ/ are perceived better in the first syllable of the rhythm unit than in the third syllable. Third, /ɯ/ and /ʌ/ before /s/ are perceived better than those before other consonants. Experiment II is a perception test on nonce words. And it is a supplementary test for the experiment I. The result of this experiment supports the fact that the subjects in the two age groups perceive /ɯ/ and /ʌ/ differently.
