Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information of leisure activity of soldiers/military men, by analysing the study of literature, interviews of daily routine work and holiday of soldiers for the promotion of an advanced elite military unit. A survey was carried out to eight reserved officers of at least 20years of military service and fifty-one currently active service non commissioned officers also of a service term of over 20years. The following are the results of the survey. 1) Leisure activity of the days of army establishment as well as the wartime․maintenance period was considered as the "Dark quickening period" because of the lack of awareness, given condition, facility related to leisure activity and also the absence of feeling happy both mentally and physically. 2) The days of the national defense system formation, together with the ‘Saemaul movement’ was considered the turning point of the awareness of individual leisure activity because of the 'Physical strength is the national strength' policy of the government, therefore encouraging soldiers to have leisure / physical activity within the military unit. 3) The period of independent national defense. As the international interest became a more, and economic growth as well as the Korean way of living improved, even within the military unit began to provide leisure time after reporting for duty of soldiers, also with the international talks, as well as the efforts made by the country itself, the culture of military leisure became much more improved. Thus, this period could be considered as a transitional period of military leisure activity. 4) The national defense development period, with the Korean army obtaining back the operation control authority of during peacetime, soldiers interests of physical training and leisure activity became greatly increased. Club activities and a five-day work week was established within the military units. This period was considered an important time for awareness of not just as a physical training but as a culture of leisure activity.
