- Abstract
- This study investigated the frequency of paraphrasing strategies used by Korean university students in English summary writing along with the quality of those paraphrases. Twenty summaries on an expository text were collected and attempted paraphrases identified. The paraphrases were analyzed according to six types of paraphrasing strategies and their qualities examined by focusing on semantic, lexical, and syntactic aspects. Results showed that the lexical/syntactic combinatory strategy was used most frequently and the syntactic modification strategy the least frequently. Some paraphrases showed semantic incompleteness while others were characterized by inappropriate lexical choices resulting from the lexical modification strategy employed. Sentence structures of the paraphrases were entirely or partially different from the source sentences. The study provides pedagogical implications for improving students’ paraphrasing skills in academic writing.
