- Abstract
- This study aims to better understand what and how factors assoiacted with demographic and socio-economic features of Korean people play an important role in determining their expenditures for leisure activities.
Unlike most previous studies mainly focusing on respondents’ atcual expenditures for a particular leisure a-c tivity, we estimated three different Tobit models by way of ulitziing actual, desired, and latent expenditures a s our dependent variables. Using national survey data (N=10,030), this study revealed that respondents’ vacation experiences served as a statistically significant predictor which determines their degrees of latent expenditures for leisure activities representing differences between desired and actual expenditures. The amount of laten t expenditures, suggesting respondents’ unpaid expenditures for elisure activities, was also closely associated with whether they raise young children and how many hours theyw ork. Furthermore, this study found tha t respondents’ desired expenditures for leisure activities were significantly related to different demographic factors including age, gender, education level, and household income level as well as socio-economic features such as residence area, labor time per week, and vacation expeiernce. Based on study findings, we provided several useful policy avenues that likely contribute to the improved leisure enjoyment of Korean people.
