- Abstract
- This study investigated the effect of Myofascial release, stabliization exercises and physical therapy on neck pain, cervical range of motion, upper trapezius activity during voluntary contraction with non-specific neck pain patients. Thirty subjects with non-specific neck pain patients were randomly divided into the Myofascial release Group (n=10), stabilization exercises Group (n=10) and physical Therapy Group (n=10). All patients performed 30 minutes a day, thrice a week for 4 weeks. The following are the conclusions of the study: 1. Neck pain The comparison result of VAS for pain of non-specific neck pain patients according to therapeutic method shows a statistically significant decrease on the pre and post test of patients in myofascial release group, stabilization exercise group and physical therapy group.
2. Cervical range of motion The comparison result of patients with non-specific neck pain according to therapeutic method shows a significant increase on cervical flexion, extension, left and right side bending, and left and right rotation on the pre and post test of patients in myofascial release group, stabilization exercise group and physical therapy group.
3. Muscle activity of voluntary contraction The comparison result of muscle activity of patients with non-specific neck pain according to therapeutic method shows a statistically significant increase of muscle activity of the left and right sternocleidomastoid during cervical flexion in the pre and post tense of patients in myofascial release group and stabilizaton exercise group (p>.01) but shows no significant difference in physical therapy group (p<0.05).
The above conclusion shows that myofascial release, stabilization exercises and physical therapy are effective on patients with non-specific neck pain and improving cervical range of motion. However, it shows that conservative physical therapy has no significant effects on muscle activity. Therefore, because of the little effectiveness of applying conservative physical therapy only on patients with non-specific neck pain, it suggests to include complex treatment methods such as myofascial treatment and stabilization exercises.
