- Abstract
- Context is a key factor in semantic interpretation for many cases, includingdeixis and quantification. The meaning of content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) also depend on the textual context (Firth 1957).
Recently with the development of corpus linguistics some efforts have beenmade to realize the above idea in a concrete way. Among others, LatentSemantic Analysis (LSA) tries to calculate the meaning distance betweenwords by means of their occurrence in context, namely paragraphs. In thispaper we outline the method of LSA and apply it to the Korean SejongCorpus. Also we get collocates of words (t-scores) and compare them with theresults of LSA. It turns out that both LSA and collocation reveal cognitivesemantic structures of words, but the former (with some limitations of themethod) in a more direct way than the latter. Finally we touch on the issuesof mental structure, semantic network, and semantic change.
