Abstract
The characteristic of Korean modern historiography have been revealed by the modes of textbook compilation. The modern history education and historiography began in 1895. It was the most distinguishing in this period that the history textbook compilation and historiography of the Great Han Empire were strongly influenced by the colonial view of history in Japan. Since Japanese annexation of Korea, the Government-General forced the unified historiography with the state selection of textbooks. After the Japanese Empire fell in 1945, the state selection of textbooks did not disappear; rather, it was inherited by the Korean government; under the military government, Korean History textbook became government-des- ignated in 1974. The state textbooks were partially converted into authorized textbooks in 2007. However, the state-designated textbook system has been paid attention since Lee Myung-bak government. This phenomenon means the vulnerability of democracy in Korea, the growth of the sound conservative force was obstructed by the extremely conservative force, which had established its identity only as anti-North Ko- rea. However, we should ponder that the top-down tactic to inject the ruling ideology has not been successful as historical experiences have exhibited.
