Abstract
This paper aims to provide contrastive analysis between experiential sentences and generic sentences in Mandarin Chinese. Both generic sentences and experiential sentences are relevant to the kind-referring and the set of situations, but they also have some differences in their aspect, quantification and negation. We can explain these differences and similarities with the cognitive perspective. In this paper, we propose that the similarities of both sentences are attributed to the fact that they profile the higher-order process. And we also assume that their differences are from instantiation and grounding of type. In Mandarin Chinese, grammatical aspect markers function as grounding predication, which turns verbs into finite clauses. Therefore, Chinese experiential sentences marked by ‘guo’ are the grounded instances. Generic sentences denote the instances in the structural plane, and experiential sentences denote the instances in the actual plane.
