- Abstract
- The research on the curriculum of Korean language education was the last topic to be studied and there are relatively small amount of studies done on it.
Although the very first dissertation on this subject was published in 1992, only three studies were done in the 1990s. As the earnest studying on the curriculum of Korean language education began in the 2000s, 40 dissertations were published in professional academic journals along with publications of three doctoral dissertations and 60 master’s thesis until the year 2011. There are various research topics on the curriculum of Korean language education regardless of the short researching history and the small amount of research results. It seems that this variety is the result of the diversification of the Korean language learner groups and the learning objectives since the 2000s.
Main topics cover research on general curriculums as well as the specified curriculums for different purposes, different learners and different contents of education. Recently, the common frame work of reference and the national standardized curriculum for overseas Koreans were developed. The research on the curriculum of Korean language education has a long way to go. In order to manage the newly created demands on Korean language education, research must be continued. In addition, to make good use of the results, the research must be conducted with consideration for the second language development theories, the model for second language education theories, the principals of syllabus design, and the characteristics of the Korean language. Moreover, objective research results such as the need analysis of learners, educational sites, corpus for Korean language education and frequency in use of the words and discourse analysis must be the basis of the research.
