- Abstract
- This paper aims to explain the mechanism of grammaticalization of aspect marker -GUO by conceptual metaphor. In Mandarin Chinese -GUO is a polysemous word. We focused on the mapping relations of metaphor of -GUO as a motion verb, directional complement, and aspect marker. We analyzed -GUO's aspectual features. The motion verb -GUO and the directional complement -GUO denote a spatial motion or direction of motion, and they can profile the process or result of motion(i.e. arriving at the endpoint). The phase complement -GUO is explained by [TIME PASSING IS MOTION OVER A LANDSCAPE] metaphor which is a subcase of the [TIME PASSING IS MOTION] metaphor, and it can profile the completion of motion. The aspect marker -GUO is explained by the two subcases of [TIME PASSING IS MOTION], i.e. [TIME PASSING IS MOTION OVER A LANDSCAPE] and [TIME PASSING IS MOTION OF AN OBJECT] metaphor. We explained that the different mapping relations of conceptual metaphor brought the aspectual difference of the verbs which can co-occur with the -GUO and the difference of -GUO's own aspectual roles.
