- Abstract
- The resumption of the Goryeo-Sung relations, which the king Munjong of the Goryeo dynasty had been eager to accomplish, was a remarkable success. The discernment that the king Munjong showed while pursuing his long-cherished desire to reopen the friendly relations with the Sung dynasty is also undeniably magnificent.
After the resumption, the seaborne trade and the foreign exchange in the form of tribute with the Sung led the financial status of the Goryeo improved. The profit from the diverse trade with the Sung provided a firm fiscal base for the reformations of the Field and Woodland System and the Goryeo s compensation system which was carried on in 1076.
Therefore, the king Munjong s exceptional diplomatic fineness that not only built up the stable foreign relations but generated much profit from the foreign trade, should be acknowledged as much as his administrative ability, such as finalizing the institutional settings of the Goryeo dynasty from which the florescence of the dynasty ensued, is esteemed.
