Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of adolescents’ academic performance on their happiness and to investigate the mediating and moderating effects of adolescents’ health and adventure activities. Method: For this purpose, a total of 9,041 response data collected by the Korea Youth Policy Research Institute through stratified multi-level sampling from 4th grade of elementary school to 3rd grade of high school were analyzed. Factor analysis, reliability test, mediating, and moderating effect analysis were conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: As a result of the analysis, It was found that the higher the academic performance of the adolescents, the higher the happiness, and the lower the academic performance, the lower the happiness. These results showed that in adolescents, academic performance is a significant factor in influencing the happiness experienced by adolescents because they have social relationships with teachers and friends through school life based on their studies. However, in adolescence, in addition to academic activities, various physical activities such as health and adventure activities also had an important influence on happiness. Therefore, this study analyzed the moderating and mediating effects of health and adventure activities. As a result of the analysis, health and adventure activities had a partial mediating effect. However, the moderating effect of the interaction variable did not show a statistically significant effect. Conclusion: Considering the fact that the level of adolescents’ happiness in Korea is one of the lowest among OECD countries and educational problems are the main reason for Korean adolescents, this study is very meaningful as proving the mediating variable of physical activities such as health and adventure activities to improve happiness.
