Abstract
This paper focuses on "Genji Monogatari Emaki," which has traditionally been classified as a paragraph-type picture scroll, and considers how its kotobagaki(詞書) and pictures express the story content of "Genji Monogatari." In previous research, the problems of story flow and time expression in picture scrolls have been considered mainly limited to the screen of the picture, however, I focused on the characteristics of picture scrolls and focused on the arrangement and connection of kotobagaki and pictures. In order to analyze it effectively, I took up the continuous picture scrolls "Shigisan Engi Emaki" and compared and considered them. As a result, in the arrangement and connection of the kotobagaki and pictures of "Genji Monogatari Emaki", the same story development and time flow expression as "Shigisan Engi Emaki" were found. In addition, each scene of 『Genji Monogatariemaki』 showed the aspect of realizing the story through various forms of expression, such as continuous, intermediate, and complex, in addition to the paragraph-type scenes. As described above, this paper recalls the original characteristics of "Genji Monogatari Emaki", which are easily overlooked by the existing method of dividing continuous and short-form emaki, to grasp the precise aspect of the rich story expression method of this work.
