Abstract
Background The study aims to microscopically explore the design of movements as a part of interaction form by understanding the attributes and their compositional patterns and examining how they affect the emotions. Methods The study examined previous studies on the design of interaction movement and came up with 4 attributes (weight, time, flow, space) mainly based on Laban's Movement Analysis (LMA). The study analyzed 22 design samples with those attributes to extract patterns, while the cases were evaluated for their emotions by users. The results were plotted on the Circumplex model to visualize the relationships to the patterns and individual attributes. Results The study found that specific attribute patterns may arouse specific emotions. Especially, the strong-sudden-free -indirect pattern of movement related to happy, joyful and active emotion, and seemed to be a more useful pattern than others. Also, specific attributes that consist of the patterns were related to specific emotions. Stronger and faster movement related to more active emotion, and slower movement aroused more distracted emotion. Conclusions The study argue that detailed understanding about the relationship between interaction movements and stimulated emotions may help interaction designers to convey intended aesthetics through the movements, and to accomplish emotional purposes according to individual functions or strategies. © 2021 This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial License.
