Abstract
The effect of phenolic resins on the tribological properties of brake linings for automobiles was investigated using straight resin, aromatic ring modified resin, silicon-modified resin, alkyl-modified resin, and acrylic-modified resin. Focusing on the thermal properties of the binder resin, their influence on the friction level, wear rate, and particle emission in brake applications was carefully examined. The results from the tribotests indicated that the decomposition of the binder resin at elevated temperatures significantly affected the friction coefficient, wear rate, and brake emission of the brake lining. The brake lining with heat-resistant resins, in general, showed a considerable reduction in the particulate matter with a diameter under 2.5 mu m (PM2.5) M high temperatures, indicating that the wear rate and particle emission of the brake lining can be reduced by using heat-resistant binder resins. However, the brake lining produced with the heat-resistant alkyl-modified resin showed a large amount of brake emission, although its high-temperature wear rate was relatively low, suggesting that brake emission can be increased by the unexpected volatile gases emitted from the modified resin.
