Abstract
This paper is one of the series of basic research for comparative studies of Zhu Xi’s earlier and later views on The Book of Odes, and represents the third comparative study on Zhengfeng(鄭風). This paper will examine the specific similarities and differences through the comparison of the currently lost articles of the second version of Shijizhuan(詩集傳), and the annotations of the currently existing third version of Shijizhuan. First and foremost, this paper collected the currently lost articles of the second version of Shijizhuan – Nüyuejiming(女曰雞鳴) of Zhengfeng - from Lü Zuqian’s Lüshijiashu Dushiji(呂氏家塾讀詩記), Zhen Dexiu’s Xishan Dushuji(西山讀書記), Duan Changwu’s Maoshijijie(毛詩集解), and Yan Can’s Shiji(詩緝). The collection of these articles will be explained in detail in comparison with the views of Mao Heng’s Shiguxunzhuan(詩故訓傳) and Shixu(詩序), Zheng Xuan’s Maoshizhuanjian(毛詩傳箋), and the third version of Shijizhuan. Through this comparison, this paper will examine how Zhu Xi comprehended the words, lines and stanzas as well as the themes of the poetry in the second and third versions, and then will examine how Zhu Xi either accepted or not the views of Shiguxunzhuan, Shixu, and Maoshizhuanjian. Afterward, this paper will elaborate on why Zhu Xi adopted the annotations and the expositions of the second version in the third version. Furthermore, this paper attempts to restore the second version to its original form through the comparison of the annotations or the expositions of the second and third versions. It is also assumed that there may be a printed edition of the second version, based on the fact that there exist many differences in letters or contents in the annotations of the second version mentioned in the works of many scholars.
