- Abstract
- Application of ceramic materials for fabrication of dental restoration has been a focus of interest in esthetic dentistry. Ceramic materials of choice are glass ceramics, spinel, alumina, and zirconia. Development of yttrium tetragonal zirconia polycrystal(Y-TZP) based systems is a recent addition to all-ceramic systems with high strength used for crowns and fixed partial dentures. CAD/CAM produced, Y-TZP based systems are in a considerable demand in esthetic and stress-bearing regions. The highly esthetic nature of zirconia coupled with its superior physical properties and bio-compatibility have resulted in restorative systems that meet demands of today`s patients. Many in vitro studies about zirconia use have been published, however clinical long-term studies are relatively scarce. The use of zirconia frameworks for long-span fixed partial dentures is currently under evaluation and further in vivo, long-term clinical studies are needed to provide scientific evidence for drawing solid guidelines. Further clinical and in vitro studies are needed to obtain the information on long-term clinical use of zirconia-based restorations.
