Abstract
The persisting lowest-low fertility in South Korea has led to active researches which found such factors as educational attainment, labor participation and values on children as key. However, abortion is a least studied topic due to the concerns on morality. As the social climate changes to women’s right of choice, the present study interests the abortion as the determinant on the fertility, focusing on married women’s right of choice in order to examine how abortion is influenced by factors such as women’s education, economic activity, pregnancy, childbirth and family relationship. Analysis results indicated that abortion determinants differed between married women with the number of children they have. Those with highly educated husbands and who lean towards having conservative attitude for marriage showed higher probability of experiencing abortion. Abortion is also significantly influenced when a woman with a child and a work status that is stable and guarantees high income. The spouse’s economic status was important determinants of abortion. A married woman’s decisionmaking for the first child is influenced by her economic or demographic situation while her decision-making for the second child is heavily influenced by her spouse. Implications on gender equality approach on marriage, childbirth and parenting are also discussed.
