- Abstract
- The trend of increasing internationalization of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is noteworthy. International business is often more challenging for SMEs because of their lack of financial and tangible resources compared with multinational enterprises (MNEs). In this study, we investigate the effect of international orientation of SMEs on performance in international markets, and explore a set of crucial internal and external factors that may potentially moderate this relationship. Using survey data from SMEs in Korea, we found the positive impact of international orientation on international performance. In addition, the findings indicate that the positive relationship between international orientation and performance might be stronger for larger firms and under conditions of high technology turbulence and market similarity in foreign markets. The results imply that international business managers should consider these internal and external factors in order to enhance their organizational performance in international markets.
