Abstract
The effect of oxygen adsorption on the surface tension of liquid iron was investigated using the constrained drop method. Experiments were carried out at 1823 K and 1873 K (1550 A degrees C and 1600 A degrees C) under a CO2-H-2 gas mixture. The experimental results were interpreted using the Langmuir ideal adsorption model and Belton's two-step adsorption model; the latter model showed better agreement with the experimental results. According to the two-step model, the surface tension of liquid Fe-O alloys at 1823 K and 1873 K (1550 A degrees C and 1600 A degrees C) can be respectively expressed as follows. sigma = 1882 - 260[0.25ln(1 + 2407a(O)) + 0.75ln(1 + 72a(O))] [T = 1823 K(1550 degrees C)], sigma = 1834 - 267[0.25ln(1 + 1445a(O)) + 0.75ln(1 + 46a(O))] [T = 1873 K(1600 degrees C)].
