Kim, Sohee & Kang, Beom-mo. 2020. The research of Korean expressions with polarity preference based on Scalar Model Theory: Distinctive Collexeme Analysis of ‘V-chi ahn-ass-ta' and ‘V-ess-ta'. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 45-1, 41-67. This research studies Korean expressions with negative and positive polarity preferences based on the Scalar Model Theory (Israel 2011). Previous studies have mainly focused on negative polarity items of which licensing condition is in either negative or positive contexts. This research is distinct from PI(polarity items) researches in that it considers words that co-occur more frequently in either negative or positive contexts. Expressions with polarity preferences are words extracted from comparing negation construction context 'V-chi ahn-ass-ta' and symmetrical affirmation context 'V-ess-ta' using Distinctive Collexeme Analysis (Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004). Then, the research qualitatively analyzes the extracted expression using basic concepts of Scalar Model theory, conceptual scales, scalar model, and quantitative and information values. The results of the research are as follows. Negative polarity preference expressions tend to be interpreted based on the Scalar Model Theory. In contrast, positive polarity preference expressions have nothing to do with conceptual scales and the scalar model except for some degree adverbs. The scalar inference is a cognitive feature that is more engaged in negative contexts than positive ones. (Korea University)
