- Abstract
- This research aims to examine the translation quality of 22 of Guy deMaupassant’s short stories which are frequently translated andpublished in Korea while investigating the translation process of Frenchliterature into Korean and the current status of French literaturetranslation in Korea.
For this purpose, 462 published translations of the 22 selectedMaupassant short stories were compared and reviewed, and the resultsfound that only 136 were directly translated from French to Korean. Therest of them were retranslations from Japanese or English-translatedversions if not characterized by rewriting or plagiarism.
In the 1960s and 70s, French literature scholars played an importantrole in the translation of French short stories, although this applies notonly to Maupassant's short stories but to all French literature. Beforethe 1980s, many French literature translations were re-translated fromJapanese versions. However, after the 1980s, they were re-translatedfrom English renditions. But since the 1990s, it has been noexaggeration to say that translation activities of Maupassant's shortstories by scholars have disappeared from the marketplace. At present, the characteristics of Maupassant translations are an increase in editedtranslations of his popular short stories through “re-writing” ratherthan actual translation.
