- Abstract
- This paper aims to analyse its contents and significances of mind-and-heart(心) in Ox mountain’s tree(牛山之木) of Sim-Gyung-Bu-Ju (心經附註). The chapter of Ox mountain’s tree noteworthy has taken notice in terms of human nature and self-cultivation in Mencius. While comparing tree of Ox mountain to innate conscience(良心), Mencius is giving the most powerful metaphor that a neglect on self-cultivation of mind-and-heart must be caused to a loss of conscience like a devastated bald mountain. Mind-and-heart(心) is differentiated to preserving mind-and-heart(存心) and losing mind-and-heart(放心) on an existential dimension. These are concepts which shows existential self-awareness and self-examination on this point. Losing mind-andheart is contextually represented to seeking mind-and-heart(求放心) in Mencius’s maxim.
Neo-confucianists positively actively accepted perserving mind-and-heart and seeking mind-and-heart as a meaningful idea of self-cultivation. They related these to mindfulness(敬), comprehensive self-cultivation concept of Neo-confucian, and granted a significance to it. They defined and presented these from the point of view of various aspect of mindfulness(敬). For preparational consideration, writer of Sim-Gyung-Bu-Ju(心經附註) described stories of vivid experience for kinds of difficulties which were realistically shown when studying mindfulness(敬). Dealing with these matters, sitting in tranquility(靜坐) and concentrating tranquility(主靜) are proposed as a more practical studying method. And then a focusing and non-distracting thoughts(主一無適), developing & cultivating(栽培涵泳), staying awakeness(常惺惺) and playing both movement and tranquility(兼動靜) are presented as a main discussion on mindfulness(敬). So integral investigation on mindfullness made an attempt generally.
