- Abstract
- This research is a case study on developing graduation gown designs for Seoul National University of Education (SNUE)’s graduate school. Lamb & Kalla’s six stage clothing design process was applied to the systematic and scientific design development, which aimed to reflect the university identity and Korean identity. Results are as follows. First, in the problem identification stage, reflecting SNUE’s identity and symbols, aesthetic satisfaction, easy management, and unisex style were found as essential factors. In the preliminary ideas stage, designs and patterns were developed considering these essential factors. In the design refinement stage, six designs were developed for each doctorate and master’s gown and discussion sessions were held with University administrators. In the analysis stage, the final three designs for each doctorate and master’s gown were selected and produced. In the decision stage, sample graduation gowns were shown to the students and administrators to survey their preferences. In the final implementation stage, the selected final designs—doctorate in black and master’s in deep blue—were produced and supplied to the university.
